Do Your Job

When you love your job so much that you are afraid to lose it, that is the day you stop doing your job.

Some of these issues point out where politicians, who are too busy holding onto their jobs to do their jobs, need to realize their fears.

Hillary 2004

Boo!

What if Hillary plans to run for president in 2004. As a Democrat, she needs a Republican in that office to run against. If Al Gore wins this 2000 presidential election, he will be the default choice for a second term in 2004. Hillary Clinton, therefore, needs Al Gore to lose this 2000 presidential election to George W. Bush.

In August, Eleanor Clift, a savage defender of everything Clintonesque, on the McLaughlin show opined that whichever party loses in 2000 will select a woman to be the vice presidential running mate in 2004. If Hillary is going to be that woman, as a Democrat she needs Al Gore to lose this 2000 presidential election to Republican George Bush.

Question is will she be satisfied with vice president? Giving her the inch, won't she take the mile? She did just pick a state she has no connection to whatsoever in which to crown herself senator, didn't she?.

In August, Ted Koppel noted on Nightline that the Democratic National Convention in L.A. was buzzing with talk about the Clintons, not the presidential candidate as it should be. Hillary co-opted Al Gore’s D.N.C. audience and national network coverage to make a senatorial campaign speech. Hillary also siphoned off money for her N.Y. race in L.A. from what should have been presidential fund-raising. The money Bill raised at the same time for his library further drained the pool for Gore.

After Hillary already had the spotlight at the D.N.C., a leak was reported by the media about Clinton’s possible indictment on the day of Gore’s acceptance speech at the D.N.C. However, who did that distraction really help? The media immediately blamed the Republicans and the prosecutor’s office. Surely, Republicans had to foresee getting the blame. Sympathy went out to poor Bill and Hillary because of another supposed attack by the great right wing conspiracy. Later the media quietly noted Republicans were not to blame; a judge, a Democrat, was the source. But just the phrase coined by Hillary, “right wing conspiracy,” repeated as it was, subliminally conjured up Hillary in the minds of all instead of Gore.

Finally, Democrats wondered aloud what was the great call by the voters for an Orthodox Jew on the ticket, especially during Clinton’s last ditch effort to play impartial realtor for the Israeli-Palestinian closing. It was probably an easy sell to Gore who was told it would clear up his Clinton-itis. However, as another Sunday morning Democrat pundit lamented the choice of Joseph Lieberman on the presidential ticket hurts the presidential ticket because it does not draw a candidate from a large voting block (only 2% of the nation is Jewish) but helps get Hillary votes in New York City (where a significant proportion of that percentage is concentrated to have an impact on elections there). Notice Lieberman hasn't given up his day job for this presidential race--he's still running for the senate (like Hillary).

Bill Clinton, no stranger to starting wars to cover his tail, now threatens voters with the prospects of an Israeli conflict drawing us into war. This Sunday’s pundits agreed that Bush-Cheney-Powell looks better than an orthodox vice president a heartbeat from the Oval Office in the face of a holy war. The controversy in Israel is being fueled by religious zealots. A vice president who is orthodox, who dares to utter the word “God” in his campaign stops, who had to be cautioned by the Jewish Anti-Defamation League for over proselytizing scares the voters. So, why did the President push negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians when all the experts said it was too much too fast? Did Bill do it for his legacy or to hobble Al's ticket. Notice Gore's campaign reduced Lieberman's visibility during the height of the recent conflict.

The evidence is that the Clintons are pushing to undo Gore to make way for Hillary in 2004. Democrats have to ask themselves, who do they love more: Gore or Hillary? If Democrats elect Gore, they'll ruin Hillary’s plan. Republicans have to ask themselves, can they defeat her presidential bid in 2004 or do they need Gore for the block?
